History: Brownella Cottage, located across the street from the Grace Church in Galion, Ohio was built in 1887 by Mary Scranton Bradford, a wealthy philanthropist from Cleveland, Ohio. She had the home built as a wedding present for her adoptive daughter Ella when she wed Bishop William Montgomery Brown. It is a reflection of the Bradford wealth and no expense was spared. Ella and Bishop Brown, who never had any children, were the only people who ever lived in the Cottage and their furniture and personal effects still fill the home.
Bishop Brown is known as one of the most colorful individuals in the history of Galion having been tried for Heresy by the Episcopal Church in 1920. |
Ella would die in 1935 and the Bishop would follow two years later. The home stood vacant - with all furnishings and personal effects intact - for nearly 50 years following the death of the Bishop. Today the Galion Historical Society preserves Brownella Cottage and the legacy of Bishop and Ella Brown.
Claims: Paranormal claims began to surface after the Galion Historical Society volunteers began hearing unexplained voices and seeing shadows throughout the house. There are no claims of paranormal activity in the Bishop’s study which was originally built as St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in 1866. It is connected to the main house by a glass enclosed walkway.
Our Findings: We investigated Brownella Cottage in August, 2020. We set up four static night vision cameras, three in the home and, even though there had been no claims of activity, we did place a camera in the Bishop’s study. Because the Grace Church is located across the street, we placed several trail cams there. We also placed additional recording devices throughout the house, study and Grace Church in an effort to corroborate the claims of unidentified voices being heard.
It was like stepping back in time. The wealth of its original owners is evident throughout this magnificent home. From the high-end furnishings to the ornate, carved woodwork this home clearly speaks to the status of Bishop and Ella Brown. For this home to stand vacant – and undisturbed – for 50 years is beyond imagination.
Even though we did not capture any evidence of the paranormal, it is certainly possible their spirits still walk here. We can’t wait to return!
