History – The Fairfield County Poor farm was originally built as a wooden structure in 1828. It was replaced by a brick basement two story building in 1840. Additions in 1854 and 1870 brought the building to its current size. Built to hold between 60-80 inmates, it reached over-flow capacity of 100 inmates in 1933.
Several tragic deaths occurred at the infirmary including 73 YO Jane Householder who was critically burned when her clothes caught fire in a cooking accident and 74 YO Seward Wagner who jumped from the roof during an attempt to end his own life. The antiquated building served the residents of Lancaster, Ohio until May, 1985 when it was shuttered for good. Claims – Paranormal claims include an apparition who roams the second and third floor. Voices and footsteps are also claimed to be heard. A small child is said to be found in the ‘morgue’, however there is no morgue in the facility and no proof that any autopsies were ever performed there. Visitors to the facility are mistaking a long shallow sink in a food prep area for an autopsy table. The Investigation – We investigated the infirmary on a chilly evening in March 2021. Under fair skies, the temps were near 40° and fell to below freezing throughout the night. There were no winds and no precipitation. After setting up four static night vision cameras, we held EVP sessions throughout the building. We were able to capture some things we can’t explain on both audio and video. Is the Fairfield County Infirmary haunted? We captured some things we can’t explain and it’s definitely worth a trip back! |
We were not in the area when this happened.
