History: The Martin Hotel was established in 1853 by Samuel and Elizabeth Martin and is one of the oldest structures in the county. During the Civil War, the Martins were known southern sympathizers who hid Rebel soldiers in the hotel disguised as workers. After Samuel died in 1906 his widow and two daughters, Lucy and Sally, operated the business. Elizabeth “Granny’ Martin died in 1930 at the age of 104. Lucy and grandson Foster Brown ran the hotel until Lucy’s death in 1954. The Morgan County Historical Society purchased the hotel in 1967, converted it to a museum and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The hotel has 28 rooms and houses a large collection of Morgan County historical items as well as items donated from other places around the country.
Claims: No claims had been reported. We just thought this was a neat historic building and wanted to investigate. The Historical Society Board of Trustees were open to the idea and we appreciate the opportunity to be the first team to investigate the museum. Our Findings: It was a cloudy, chilly evening when we investigated this location. The temperature was 39°F with light winds at 11 mph from the northwest. By the time we wrapped up the investigation the temp had dropped to 33 °F and the winds had calmed to 8 mph. The building does have heat but we opted not to turn it on. The walls of the hotel are very thin and outside noise could easily be heard. Fortunately there was nothing else going on in town that evening so traffic was light. Since no claims had been reported we began in the lobby and worked our way through the building trying to make contact with the Martin family. We were pleasantly surprised to catch EVPs, see shadow movement and have our rempods light up. The most active areas seemed to be the lobby and the hallway of the second floor. The haunting appears to be intelligent as it called the tour guide who was with us by name. The EVPs were some of the best we have ever captured. We can’t wait to return for a follow-up investigation! |

Not sure what this is.....we are in the dining room doing an EVP session. It seems like a mist comes from the left (the dining room area) and develops into a more solid white mass as it passes through to the right.
