History: The Gothic style home located at 612 First Avenue, Vinton Iowa, is named for long-time resident George Horridge. There are conflicting reports as to whether he built the home or not, nonetheless, by 1869 it was home to Horridge and his first wife Elizabeth. The original part of the home generally consisted of 4 rooms on the first floor and four rooms on the second floor and is thought to have been made by bricks from the local brickyards. The home would be greatly enlarged in later years. The home has been beautifully preserved, keeping intact the original brass lion head door knocker, a beautiful French pier mirror in the parlor as well as a Romanesque sculptural relief which was brought back from Italy by the second Mrs. Horridge. Claims: Paranormal claims include seeing a shadow figure in the second floor bedroom, hearing voices and being physically touched. Many feel it is George Horridge who haunts this home. Our Findings: We investigated the Horridge House in April, 2022. The location has not been overly investigated so there were no real identified hot spots. |
After setting up four static night vision cameras – three on the first floor and one on the second floor where the shadow figure was seen – we began holding EVP sessions throughout the home. While we had access to the basement, we chose not to investigate that part of the house.
Almost immediately we began to get Rempod activity in the parlor as well as capturing unidentified voices. Once we moved to the top of the stairs where the shadow figure is claimed to be seen, the Rempod activity really ramped up. We also caught more unidentified voices throughout the house on a recorder we left in the second floor apartment. Finally, during an EVP session in the dining room, we smelled a very strong floral fragrance – a claim that has never been made before. We did a thorough check for any air fresheners and the property managers did confirm there are no air fresheners in the home.
While we did not capture any evidence of the claimed shadow figure, we did capture the unexplained voices and had a personal experience with the floral fragrance that we can’t explain. It seems that this home and its spirits are waiting to tell their story.
