History: Originally, Waverly Hills Sanatorium was a two-story frame building, with a hipped roof and half timbering. Construction on this building began in 1908, and opened for business on July 26, 1910. The building was designed to safely accommodate 40-50 tuberculosis patients. Soon the little TB clinic was filled with more than 140 people, and it was obvious that a much larger hospital was needed to treat those afflicted with the condition.
The massive, collegiate, gothic style Sanatorium that replaced the original building remains standing on Waverly Hill today. It was built to accommodate at least 400 patients and was considered one of the most modern and well equipped facilities at the time. Construction of this Sanatorium began in March 1924 and opened for business on October 17, 1926. The facility served as a tuberculosis hospital until 1961, when the discovery of an antibiotic that successfully treated and cured TB rendered the facility obsolete. It was closed down and quarantined, then renovated. In 1962, the building reopened as WoodHaven Medical Services, a geriatric facility. WoodHaven Medical was closed by the state in 1980. Our Findings: Waverly Hills Sanatorium is absolutely the crown jewel when it comes to paranormal activity. In all my years of ghost hunting it was the first location that I visited where I actually heard disembodied voices. In other locations I had captured EVPs and heard other sounds (doors closing, footsteps, etc.) but Waverly was the first location where I actually heard responses to my questions at the time. And we were fortunate to catch them on tape so you can hear them too. The first trip to Waverly was in August, 2011 with a team from Akron, Ohio. It was very warm – about 82 degrees – and the weather made it seem like a horror film. Dark, stormy, full moon. No noteworthy photographic evidence was obtained during that trip. The audio evidence however was amazing – and substantial. Besides the disembodied voices, we heard the elevator (which hasn’t worked in many years), whistling, knocks, doors slamming and sounds that reminded us of someone ‘rustling around’. We also caught a lot of EVPs that we did not hear at the time – both children and adults. The second trip in March, 2012 was with the team from Cincinnati, Ohio. The weather was drastically different. It was very cold and damp – OK it was freezing….Most of the team ended up very ill before the end of the investigation. Again we heard disembodied voices and the EVPs were amazing. This time we did capture some photographic evidence which we are sharing here. |
